Elon Musk's electric car company Tesla opened its first showroom in India at Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on Tuesday, July 15. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated it.
The company launched the Model Y SUV as its first car in India. The rear-wheel-drive version is priced at about Rs 60 lakh and the Long Range version at about Rs 68 lakh.
The cars are being imported from Tesla's plant in Shanghai, China. Because of heavy import duties, the price in India is much higher than in the US or China.
Tesla said deliveries would start from the third quarter of the year. Its next showroom is planned for Delhi, along with Superchargers in the Mumbai and Delhi regions.
Tesla regional director Isabel Fan said it would take time to cover the whole country. For now, buyers in Punjab will have to wait a little longer.
