Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, August 26, flagged off the e Vitara, Maruti Suzuki's first battery electric vehicle, from the Suzuki Motor plant at Hansalpur in Gujarat.
The made-in-India electric SUV will be exported to more than 100 countries, including advanced markets in Europe and Japan. With this, India becomes Suzuki's global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles.
The e Vitara was first shown at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in January.
At the same event, the Prime Minister also inaugurated local production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant, a joint venture of Toshiba, Denso and Suzuki. The government says more than 80 per cent of the battery's value will now be made in India.
The government called it a major example of 'Make in India'. It is the first electric car from India's biggest carmaker, and buyers at home are waiting for it too.
