Shots were fired at comedian Kapil Sharma's newly opened Kap's Cafe in Surrey, Canada, at about 1:50 am on Thursday, July 10. The cafe is on 120 Street in the Newton neighbourhood.
Police said staff were inside at the time, but no one was injured. Several bullet holes were left in the cafe's windows and glass was shattered.
The cafe had opened only a week before the attack. Surrey Police began an investigation and said they were looking at possible links to other incidents.
According to media reports, Harjit Singh Laddi, linked to the banned group Babbar Khalsa International, claimed responsibility. Extortion attacks on Punjabi businesses in Surrey were already a worry for the community.
It was not the last attack on the cafe. It was shot at again in August and once more in October, and each time it reopened.
