India's star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra crossed the 90-metre mark for the first time on Friday, May 16, throwing 90.23 m at the Doha Diamond League. The throw is also a new national record.
After fouling his second attempt, Chopra produced the historic throw with his third. His previous personal best was 89.94 m, set at the Stockholm Diamond League in 2022.
Even so, he had to settle for second place. Germany's Julian Weber won the event with 91.06 m on his final throw of the evening.
Chopra is the 25th man in history to throw beyond 90 m, and his effort is the third-best by an Asian athlete, after Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem and Chao-Tsun Cheng of Chinese Taipei.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him on the feat. Chopra, who had faced questions about the 90 m mark for years, said this was just the beginning.
