India won the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup for the first time on Sunday, beating South Africa by 52 runs in the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
The victory gave India their first ICC title in women's cricket, after years of near misses, including a narrow defeat to England in the 2017 final at Lord's.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who hails from Moga in Punjab, sealed the win by completing the catch to dismiss South Africa's Nadine de Klerk. It was her fifth World Cup.
“I'm just trying to express what I'm feeling. I'm numb, I'm not able to understand,” Harmanpreet said after the final. “There were ups and downs, but the team had self-belief.”
All-rounder Deepti Sharma was named Player of the Tournament.
