Fauja Singh, known around the world as the 'Turbaned Tornado', died on July 14 after being hit by a vehicle while crossing a road near his native village of Beas Pind in Jalandhar district. He was 114 years old.
He was taken to a hospital in Jalandhar, where he succumbed to his injuries. The vehicle that hit him did not stop.
Born in Beas Pind in 1911, according to his family, Singh moved to England in the 1990s and settled in Ilford, east London. He took up running seriously in 1995, at around 89, after the death of his son, and ran his first marathon in London in 2000.
In October 2011, he became the first 100-year-old to finish a marathon, completing the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Guinness World Records did not list the feat because he could not produce a birth certificate, which was rarely issued in Indian villages when he was born.
He also carried the Olympic torch ahead of the 2012 London Games and retired from competitive running after the Hong Kong Marathon in 2013.
