Donald Trump sworn in as 47th US President, begins second term

Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday, January 20. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office.

Because of the bitter cold, the ceremony was held inside the Capitol Rotunda instead of outdoors on the Capitol steps, as is the tradition. JD Vance was sworn in as Vice President.

Soon after taking office, Trump signed a series of executive orders, including declarations of a national emergency at the southern border with Mexico and a national energy emergency.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar attended the ceremony as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's special envoy and handed over a letter from the Prime Minister to Trump.

PM Modi congratulated Trump, calling him "my dear friend", and said he looked forward to working closely together again for the benefit of both countries.
